Five people have been killed and five others injured after an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport and crashed into several vehicles, authorities said.The Boeing 767-300 freighter, operated by 21 Air on behalf of Amazon Prime Air, was landing at around 2pm local time on Sunday, September 6, after flying from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The aircraft failed to stop within the runway area, crossed onto a nearby road and struck multiple vehicles before coming to rest and catching fire.The impact sparked a major emergency response, with more than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units and roughly 200 emergency personnel sent to the scene. Firefighters battled intense flames and a fuel leak while rescuers worked to reach people trapped inside vehicles and in the aircraft.Five people died in the crash. Another five were injured, including three who were taken to trauma centres in critical condition. Two others were transported to hospitals with less serious injuries. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the victims or confirmed whether all of those killed were inside the vehicles or aboard the aircraft.The pilots were reportedly trapped inside the cockpit during the initial rescue operation and were later reached by emergency crews. The condition of the crew was not immediately clear.The crash caused significant disruption at Miami International Airport, with flights temporarily halted while emergency crews dealt with the wreckage. More than 160 flights were cancelled and hundreds more delayed, although airport operations later began to resume.Investigators from the US National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are now working to establish what caused the aircraft to overrun the runway. Severe weather was reported in the Miami area at the time, including thunderstorms and wind gusts, but officials have not said that weather was responsible for the crash.Amazon has expressed condolences to those affected and said it is cooperating with the investigation. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 767 that had previously been used as a passenger aircraft before being converted to cargo operations.The investigation is expected to examine the aircraft’s approach and landing, weather conditions, runway conditions and the plane’s mechanical systems before any conclusion is reached.
